My Tools

Every job has an appropriate tool. A skilled craftsman with a well-organized shop and tool-box is always preferable to the guy who only has a hammer and for whom, "...every problem looks like a nail."

I own and use the following programs and run them on an HP workstation-class computer equipped with an i7 processor and 32 GB of RAM. Five monitors allow me to spread things out and avoid a lot of window swapping.

For tricky sound repair, nothing beats iZotope RX 6 Audio Editor Advanced. This is the "Swiss Army Knife" of sound repair. iZotope maintains a crew of signal transformation theorists and computer algorithm scientists. There be magic here.
  • Removal tools can work on a selection (including the entire file) to: De-clip, De-click, De-hum, De-noise, De-plosive and De-reverb. Some modules simply apply standard transformations. Others allow you to select areas to use as the model of the desired target.
  • Transformation tools can intelligently "Deconstruct" noise from signal, apply a uniform ambiance or equalization match, produce a leveling control line, change timing and/or pitch, or apply broadcast industry loudness standards.
  • Spectral repair is primarily used for hand-editing and has its own sub-tools for selecting time/frequency areas and changing that selection. An "Instant Process" mode increases productivity by automatically performing an operation immediately upon selection.
My go-to DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is Presonus Studio One 3 Pro. I also maintain a subscription to Avid Pro-Tools. Both include their own suite of filters, processors and tools along with generous collections of electronic instruments, samples and loops.

Additional DAW plugins include:
  • The Antares AVOX4 suite of 11 voice processors including, Throat, Punch, and Harmony Engine.
  • A large suite of
  • Celemony Melodyne Editor Studio Edition, a multi-timbral analyzer/editor that gives a graphical display, and editing platform for notes and syllables, even when they may occur simultaneously. I can correct or change the timing and tone of a singing or played performance and even convert the events into MIDI notes.
  • iZotope Nectar 2 processor train including Breath Control and Pitch Editor
  • iZotope Iris 2 for generating highly-complex, dynamically-developing sounds.
  • Additional electronic instruments and sample collections
I also have available:
  • Pinnacle Studio 21 Ultimate, Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum, and Avid Media Composer First
I don't bill myself as a video editor, but I can get around in a video file. Mostly, I use Pinnacle for my own YouTube projects and to extract and replace audio tracks. I would talk about straightforward video projects without a lot of flash and bang.
  • Green screen wall with room for 2-person interviews, 3 monitors for prompter text and 3-camera video capture.
  • Band in a Box Ultimate 2018
Do you need royalty-free instrumental songs in your choice of styles? Do you need a background accompaniment for your solo?
  • Sony Acid Pro 7
  • Sony Sound Forge Studio 10
  • Audacity, because, why not?
  • Alesis QS8 88-key MIDI keyboard controller and audio synth
